Diphylleia grayi is a little-known mayapple and fairy wing relative, native to moist wooded mountainsides in colder regions of China and Japan.

Diphylleia grayi forms clumps of large, fuzzy, green, umbrella-like, bold foliage topped by small clusters of white, mayapple-like flowers in late spring.

When it rains on the flowers they magically turn translucent then return to white as they dry.

Method

To imitate the transparency of Float, we meticulously craft each lamp with thin porcelain by slip casting. Slip casting start with preparing liquid clay, Slip. It’s not just powdered clay thinned down with water but a liquid clay with additives to keep the slip liquefied with as little water content as possible. After filling the slip into the cast, the slip will be standing in the mold for a calculated time. Pouring the remaining slip, we have a leather hard cast. After firing, the cast will become thin layer of petals that turn translucent when the lamp blooms.
